Overview

This policy describes how Backrefs handles personal data collected through this website, which currently exists to take signups for our early-access waitlist. If you have any questions, contact us at [email protected].

Information we collect

Information you provide. When you join the waitlist, we collect your email address.

Information collected automatically. When you visit the site or submit a form, we process technical data such as your IP address and browser information. With your consent, we also collect usage analytics (see Cookies and analytics below).

How we use your information

We use your email address to manage the waitlist and to contact you about early access. We don’t keep a copy in our own database; it is held by our email service provider on our behalf. Technical data is used to keep the site secure and to prevent spam and abuse, and is retained only as long as needed for those purposes. Analytics data, where you have consented to it, is used to understand how the site is used and to improve it.

How we share your information

We do not sell your personal data. We share it only with service providers that process it on our behalf and on our instructions, such as our email platform (Brevo), our security and bot-protection provider (Cloudflare), our payment processor (Stripe), and, with your consent, our analytics provider (PostHog) and our advertising and measurement provider (Meta Platforms), and, when you arrive through a partner link, our affiliate program provider (AffiliateBase). Each is bound by its own data protection obligations.

Cookies, analytics and advertising

The site stores functional preferences (like your light/dark theme) in your browser. We also use analytics cookies and session analytics (PostHog) to understand how the site is used, and, separately, marketing cookies and conversion measurement (Meta) to measure the effectiveness of our advertising. For Meta measurement, we send events such as signing up or purchasing to Meta from our servers; these include your email address and account ID in hashed form, together with technical data such as your IP address, browser information, and Meta’s _fbp/_fbc cookie identifiers (which may also be stored with our payment records at Stripe). If you arrive through a partner (affiliate) link, we also set a referral cookie so the partner can be credited if you later subscribe; it is set only on visits arriving through such a link and is not used for advertising or analytics. Where the law requires consent (such as in the EU), analytics and marketing each run only if you accept them in the cookie banner; elsewhere they are on by default. If you decline or opt out, no analytics or marketing cookies are set and nothing is recorded or sent. You can review or change each choice at any time:

Data retention

We keep your email address for as long as you remain on the waitlist. If you unsubscribe or ask us to delete it, it is removed. Technical and security data is kept only for short periods appropriate to its purpose.

Your rights and choices

Every email we send includes an unsubscribe link, and unsubscribing removes you from the waitlist mailings. Depending on where you live, you may also have rights to access, correct, delete, or receive a copy of your personal data, and to withdraw consent at any time. To exercise any of these, email [email protected].

Changes to this policy

If how we handle data changes, we’ll update this page and the date at the top.
