What the extension is for

Backrefs Page Capture is a browser extension for customers of Backrefs. When our servers cannot read a page you want a campaign built around (for example a page that requires you to be signed in), the extension lets you read that page from your own browser and hand it to the Backrefs campaign wizard you have open. That is its only purpose.

What it reads, and when

The extension reads a page only when you open its popup on that page and press Send this page to Backrefs. It reads what is visible on that one page at that moment: the text, the title and description tags, the site name, and the web addresses of the images and outbound links on it. It does not read passwords, form fields you have typed into, cookies, or any other page or tab, and it never reads anything on its own or in the background.

Where the page goes

The extension itself sends nothing to any server. It hands the captured page to a Backrefs tab that is open in your browser, and only to tabs on backrefs.com. If no Backrefs tab is waiting for a page, the capture is discarded. The Backrefs website then sends the capture to our servers under your own account, exactly as if our servers had read the page themselves, to suggest keywords and offer the page’s images for your campaign. The page’s text is processed by our AI provider (OpenRouter) for those suggestions and is not kept by us after the request; the suggestions, and any image addresses you choose to keep, are stored with your campaign like the rest of its settings. The site’s privacy policy covers that processing.

Permissions it asks for

Read the page you are on when you use it (Chrome’s activeTab and scripting permissions): needed to read the page after you press Send, and only that page, only then.

Access to backrefs.com: needed to find your open Backrefs tab and hand it the capture. The extension does not run on, read, or change any other website.

What it does not do

It does not collect your browsing history, does not track you, does not use analytics or advertising identifiers, does not store anything on your device beyond what Chrome keeps for every extension, and does not sell or share data with anyone. It contains no remotely loaded code.

Your choices

Nothing is read unless you press Send. You can remove the extension at any time from your browser’s extensions page, which ends its access completely. For anything about data held in your Backrefs account, email [email protected].

Changes to this policy

If what the extension reads or where it goes changes, we’ll update this page and the date at the top.
